How do I know which examinations I have to register for and when I have to register for them?

The appendices to the degree-specific Examination Regulations or, for examinations in studies in secondary education (Profil Lehramt an Gymnasien) and studies in business education (Profil Handelslehrer), the appendix to the Double-Subject Examination Regulations (.pdf) and for examinations in Supplementary Studies (Profil Fachergänzung), the
Catalogue of Supplementary Subjects stipulate which examinations are to be taken in which degree programme or specialist field. Basic rules:

  • All examinations included in the list must be registered for.
  • Examinations that are taken during the lecture period (e.g. assignments) must be registered for during the registration period for the first examination period.
  • Examinations for which there is no opportunity to take a resit in the same semester (e.g. assignments) must be registered for during the first registration period.
  • For examinations for which there is the opportunity to take a resit in the same semester (e.g. written examinations, tests), you can chose whether you would like to take these in the first or second examination period. Depending on your choice, registration is required in the first or second registration period.

Below are examples of different modules and information on when to register for the required examinations (click on the images to enlarge).

Two examination registrations are required for the Foundation Module:

  • Protocol and
  • Seminar paper with a written form.

As there is no opportunity to take a resit in the same semester for either of these examinations, these must be registered for in the first registration period!

Three examination registrations are required for the Intermediate Module, as the lecture content is not part of the module (part) examination and so regular attendance at lectures must be evidenced:

  • Certificate of attendance at lectures,
  • Seminar paper and
  • Written examination.

As there is no there is no opportunity to take a resit in the same semester for either the attendance certificate or seminar paper, these must be registered for in the first registration period!

For written examinations, the student can choose whether to take these in the first or second examination period and must then register for these beforehand in the appropriate registration period. Using the first examination period is recommended, however, especially if the module - and thus the examination - is only offered once a year.

For the Advanced Module only one examination registration is required:

  • Written examination

For written examinations, the student can choose whether to take these in the first or second examination period and must then register for these beforehand in the appropriate registration period. Using the first examination period is recommended, however, especially if the module - and thus the examination - is only offered once a year.

For the Specialisation Module only one examination registration is required. Whether all the listed examinations are actually available will be announced at the start of the lectures.

Apart from written and oral examinations, there tends to be no opportunity to resit examinations and so registration must take place in the first registration period.

Example from Supplementary Studies (Profil Fachergänzung):

For the Danish 1 Module a total of two examination registrations are required:

  • Written examination for Danish I
  • Written examination for Danish II

Here, as in subject-related cases, there is generally the opportunity to use the first and the second examination period and their corresponding registration periods.

Important: Both lectures are a compulsory part of the module; parts of the module do not count on their own!
