Recognition of academic achievements

What academic achievements can be recognised?

You can get academic achievements (which were attained e.g. prior to studying at Kiel University, within the framework of a first degree at Kiel University or during studies abroad) recognised if they comply in terms of learning targets with the academic achievements stipulated by Kiel University's degree-specific Examination Regulations or the Catalogue of Supplementary Subjects – these can be individual examinations, whole modules, theses or even a complete degree.

How are my prior academic achievements recognised?

You can find out about the exact recognition process from your Examination Office. Basically, you have to submit evidence of your academic achievements (e.g. transcripts of records). Module descriptions highlighting learning targets are also helpful.

Is recognition of prior academic achievements compulsory?

If you have prior academic achievements that clearly and fully comply with the academic achievements stipulated by the degree-specific Examination Regulations, then you must specify these yourself and have them recognised.

What can I get recognised for a new subject or specialist field if I have irrevocably failed a subject or specialist field?

If you have irrevocably failed a subject or specialist field you can get academic achievements for this subject or specialist field recognised for another subject or specialist field if they are equivalent to academic achievements defined in the relevant degree-specific Examination Regulations or the Catalogue of Academic Achievements.

How long does it take for recognised academic achievements to be entered?

Depending on the workload of the Examination Offices, the time it takes to enter academic achievements into the examinations administration system may vary. It is best if you submit your academic achievements for recognition as early as possible so that there is plenty of time for this.

What do I do if there are problems or disagreements with the recognition process?

If the equivalence of your academic achievements is not certified, it is possible to enter an objection and get the decision reviewed. You can get more detailed information on this from the relevant Examination Office.

Are there special regulations for academic achievements from stays abroad?

The same regulations apply to academic achievements from abroad as to academic achievements from a German university. You are strongly encouraged to ensure that academic achievements from a stay abroad cover or usefully supplement the content of your degree curriculum.

Speak to your academic advisor before your stay abroad and decide what lectures to attend and what academic achievements you should aim for while you're abroad.
